Al-Qadim Adventures: Genie Blessings

One of the driving ideas of Al-Qadim is  powerful genies use mortals as game pieces, enticing them with powers and tricking them with promises. One of the ideas I wanted to communicate was the idea spellcasters of the setting could call upon the genies in their spells. These spells are meant to communicate the theme of the genie, as well as openly display the power  being bestowed on the caster. In short, no one should be surprised the caster is asking the genie for aid. In a setting where genies jockey for power and people are fearful or covetous of the powers they wield, this can be a significant disadvantage. What follows is just a sampling of potential genie blessings, and the specific thematic through-lines I am attempting to convey in the current Al-Qadim update.

Blessing of Khem-Nefet
4th-level Transmutation
Casting Time: 1 Action
Range: Self
Components: V,S
Duration: Concentration, up to 10 minutes

When you call upon Khem-Nefet to bestow a portion of his power upon you, a glowing horse briefly flickers over your head and then fades away. Mundane broken objects carried on your person are mended when this spell is cast. Until the spell ends, you gain the following benefits:

  • You have resistance to poison damage.
  • You have advantage on saving against the charmed and frightened condition.
  • As a bonus action, whenever you deal bludgeoning damage, you may choose for the ground to quake at the location the damage is dealt. Creatures in a 5-foot radius must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw, or be knocked prone.
  • Being hit with a magic weapon causes you to make the concentration check with disadvantage.

Blessing of Murat Al-Huzn
4th-level Transmutation
Casting Time: 1 Action
Range: Self
Components: V,S
Duration: Concentration, up to 10 minutes

When you call upon Murat Al-Huzn to bestow a portion of her power upon you, a glowing owl briefly flickers over your head and then fades away. Your body seems lighter, and you leave no tracks of your passing for the spell’s duration. Until the spell ends, you gain the following benefits:

  • You have resistance to necrotic damage.
  • Ranged attacks made by you ignore cover.
  • As a reaction, you may impose disadvantage on a ranged attack targeting you.
  • You gain fly speed equal to your movement speed.
  • Being hit with a cold-iron weapon causes you to make the concentration check with disadvantage

Blessing of Nafurat Min Al-Atham
4th-level Transmutation
Casting Time: 1 Action
Range: Self
Components: V,S
Duration: Concentration, up to 10 minutes

When you call upon Nafurat Min Al-Atham to bestow a portion of his power upon you, a glowing serpent briefly flickers over your head and then fades away. Your skin appears to be liquid, and you force any dim light within a 10-foot radius to darken until your passing. Until the spell ends, you gain the following benefits:

  • You have resistance to psychic damage.
  • As a reaction to being targeted with a spell, you may either force disadvantage on the attack or grant yourself advantage on the saving throw.
  • As a bonus action, whenever you hit with a spell that deals cold or piercing damage, or when you hit with a melee or ranged attack that deals piercing damage, you may add 1d6 cold damage to the attack.
  • Being hit with an ash weapon causes you to make the concentration check with disadvantage

Blessing of Nahas Al-Aizdira
4th-level Transmutation
Casting Time: 1 Action
Range: Self
Components: V,S
Duration: Concentration, up to 10 minutes

When you call upon Nahas Al-Aizdira to bestow a portion of her power upon you, a glowing heron briefly flickers over your head and then fades away. Your skin appears as if were made of glowing coals on the edge of dying, shedding dim light in a 10-foot radius. Until the spell ends, you gain the following benefits:

  • You have resistance to cold damage.
  • As a bonus action, you can add 1d8 fire damage to a successful damaging spell or weapon attack you have made this turn.
  • As an action, you may turn the dim light being shed into a thick cloud of smoke centered on you, providing you half-cover. This returns to dim light at the start of your next turn.
  • Being hit with an obsidian weapon causes you to make the concentration check with disadvantage
